With technology evolving and people becoming more used to using a computer, companies are wanting to maintain their own websites using CMS ( Content Management System ).

We thought we would put together a little tip sheet on things to remember when maintain your website

Content is key!

It may sound like I am pointing out the obvious but it really does get overlooked time and time again.

All the search engines scan sites content now – almost ignoring things like meta tags. The more content you have on your site the more the search engines can scan – but there is more to it than that: people like content too!

People judge if a website is performing by the amount of traffic that it gets and without interesting, useful content why would people visit your site?

Relevant content and lots of it is a key for a successful web site.

Freshness

Keep it current!

Having lots of content is great – but if it is all years old, out of date it’s not going to look like your site is much of a priority. You would not see a shop window offering out of date food and think – I know I will have some of that gone off bread. It’s a similar thing with your web site, think of it as your shop window.

Search engines actually track how frequently your site changes as they visit it for indexing. The more often it changes the better your rank.

Using features such as Latest News, Blogs all give you easy ways to keep adding to your web site without having to scramble your core message

No tricks

You can’t cheat to the top!

Many design firms promise the world with phrases such as ‘we can get you on the first page of google’ and ’increase your traffic by using our tools’

I am not saying that all SEO ( search engine optimisation ) companies or going to cheat you, but I am just saying to watch your back and wallet.

The truth is its honest content that is kept up to date that will increase your position check out this website for more information.

Ask for help

There are a lot of other factors that makes a web site function well, a lot that happens behind the scenes

A web site needs to be constructed correctly, the structure needs to follow the correct format to get the most out of search engines, it is important to know when to ask for help.

Do not sacrifice the look of your site because you do not have the technological knowledge to archive your idea, get in contact with your web agency, you never know what you thought was a huge job may not be at all

Always worth sending an email or picking up the phone

You may of heard that after 19 years of running time Microsoft is dropping its browser Internet Explorer and finally attempting to catch up with other browser on the market ( such as Chrome, Firefox and Safari ) by releasing ‘SPARTAN’

Being a big fan of Frank miller’s 300 film I find the name strong and appealing but will it be able to perform to users expectations?

Spartan is meant to be, well, Spartan. Internet Explorer is commonly viewed as bulky and slow and Microsoft really needs to shake off that user preconceptions.

The new browser is being released on the windows 10 platform, if you are running the beta version you will be able to install Spartan right now!

Does the browser look different?

Well..yes it has adopted the modern style of other browsers with minimalist icons and sparse use of boarders . Yet the interface itself is not any smaller than that of Internet Explorer which, contrary to popular opinion, is quite compact. In fact, the default toolbar takes up more space than the one in Internet Explorer 11.

Not a great start, then. And the bulk of the interface becomes an issue elsewhere. In drop-down menus and context menus, for example, there is significant white space between each item. That means the menu is larger than in other browsers, and as a result scroll bars are more likely to appear. Similar problems appear in the settings pane, which is simply a long list of options with significant white space that would be better organized with tabs or sub-menus.

We have to remember at this point that there is still time to iron out bugs and things.

For me working on the internet it will take quite a big jump for me to switch browsers. The version of Spartan I have had a go with clearly isn’t a finished polished browser as of yet, it would be unfair to say if it’s the next big browser or not.

I like that Microsoft have seen that they need to improve one of their products and are tackling it head on.
